Location:

Liepāja, Latvia
Designed in:

Eindhoven,
The Netherlands

Work in this project is divided into two stages:

01  Remote work

The organisers of the Riga Technical University Architecture summer school sent out a brief about the location and an additional image.

Assignment:  to reimagine it as a public space for exhibitions, performances and other creative operations.

02 On-Site work

In August, 2025, I will partake in the summer school and further develop the concept on site.
The participation will ensure a more thorough design solution and comprehensive understanding of the environment, it's needs and possibilities in a realistic manner.

First stage

First concept development based on one image, sent by the organisers.

Design workshop and state archive in a renovated building, with a constructed second floor, pull-out archive shelves, rails for rearranging information boards and moving heavy objects. The space is intended to be freely accessible to archive visitors, but oriented towards an appointment-based service system. It is possible to organize seminars, workshops, and research missions within it.

Context

“Boļševiks” ( now Industrial Park Kursa) was founded in 1946 as part of the collective farm union all across the Soviet Union.
The first ships it owned, which the fishermen used to go out to sea, were trophy ships from Germany, the so-called “kocenieki.”

Despite such technical equipment, by 1951 the fishermen’s kolkhoz became a millionaire.
In 1954, “Boļševiks,” with 248 members, was the largest and wealthiest fishing enterprise in Latvia.
